- Is my voice recording private?
- Yes, completely. Your audio is stored using the browser's IndexedDB API — a local database on your device. No data is transmitted to any server. The page works entirely offline once loaded. Only you can access the files, and only through this browser on this device.
- What happens if I clear my browser data?
- Clearing your browser's site data, cookies, or storage will erase your capsules permanently. We recommend downloading your message using the Download button once it unlocks, and keeping that file somewhere safe (like a cloud drive or external storage) as a backup. Browser storage is convenient but not a permanent archive.
- Can I cheat the date lock by changing my system clock?
- Technically yes — the gate uses your device's clock. But the point of a voice capsule is the emotional experience of hearing your past self speak at exactly the right moment. Cheating the lock only robs you of that experience. The lock is a commitment device, not a security system.
- How long can I record, and what format is the audio?
- There is no hard limit enforced by this tool — recordings up to several hours are possible, though very long recordings will use more browser storage. Audio is saved in WebM format (the standard MediaRecorder output in most browsers). The Download button exports this as a
.webm file, which plays in Chrome, Firefox, VLC, and most modern media players. On Safari, the format may be MP4/AAC instead.
- What are some good uses for a voice capsule?
- People use voice capsules to record a message to themselves on New Year's Eve to open next year, to send encouragement to their future self during a hard time, to document goals before starting a challenge and reflect on progress afterwards, to capture how they sound (and think) at a particular age, or to leave a memory for a milestone like a birthday, graduation, or anniversary.
